Adventure Guide: Up In The Air

hot air balloon floats over Park Meadows

There really are countless ways to enjoy the Wasatch Mountain Range. You can slide down them when it’s snowing, or bike down them when it’s warm. You can hike them, camp in them or wildlife-watch in them. Many of the most adventurous among us have done all of that and more. Think you’ve seen it all? Think again. One of the truly unique ways to enjoy the mountains is from above! In a hot air balloon! You’ve seen our gorgeous mountains every other way; from the cozy confines of a hot air balloon, you can gain a whole new appreciation for them.

So, where to begin? Thankfully, this is not a new idea, and there are several hot air balloon guides that will take you up and blow your minds. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that this activity takes some planning, especially in the time of COVID-19. Many hot air balloon touring companies are limiting trips to private group-only to reduce interactions between strangers. So if you want to float the friendly skies, you’ll want to put your own group together (preferably already within your quarantine bubble!) and make a reservation ahead of time.

Here are two of your options for getting into the skies above Park City:

Bigfoot Balloons
385-285-5899
Bigfoot Balloons offers one-hour flights and they leave from 6065 Silver Creek Drive in Park City. You’ll cruise at 1,500 feet and, as is hot air balloon tradition, cap off the adventure with a champagne toast!

Skywalker Balloon Company
801-824-3934
While Skywalker offers flights from Ogden, Heber and St. George, it calls the Park City tour its “signature” European mountain experience. Flights leave at sunrise, and groups meet at the Best Western Landmark Plus, 6560 N Landmark Drive. Increased vehicle and equipment sanitization is in place, as well as free masks and hand sanitizer for all passengers.

Global balloon fiesta ready for liftoff

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The sun is close to popping over the mountain top and the hot air balloon pilots are beginning to test their propane burners, beating back what’s left of the darkness and the crisp morning air with each quick burst of bright orange and blue flames.
Fans start to roar, pushing air into the giant, colorful envelopes as ground crews pace along the inflating fabric, ensuring every inch is sound as the balloon takes shape.
The ropes are taught, the fasteners secure and the gondolas tip upright with a strong blast of the burners.
Liftoff!
Hundreds of balloons will be filling New Mexico’s skies on Saturday at the start of the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

Tourism group gets a taste of Balloon Race Capital of Texas

Tourism group gets a taste of Balloon Race Capital of Texas

Standing at The Green, looking toward the Airbender hot air balloon rising across the park, Charlie McIlvain had a simple compliment of the Balloon Race Capital of Texas.
“It’s a beautiful city,” he said of Longview, “and y’all have a lot of amenities. This park is just one of them.”
McIlvain, of Kerrville, was escorting a Texas Travel Industry Association tour Tuesday.
The association takes about 20 counselors who work at Texas Department of Transportation travel information centers — such as the center on Interstate 20 in Waskom — on a five-day tour each year.
Counselors learn about events and attractions along the tour so they can share with visitors of travel information centers as they enter the Lone Star State.
Representatives from Texas Highways magazine and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department joined on the tour, which began Sunday in Dallas.
The group arrived Monday in Longview. Their stops included a barbecue sample at Bodacious Bar-B-Q on Mobberly Avenue, a brief tour of the S.E. Belcher Chapel and Performance Center at LeTourneau University and a quick downtown tour with stops at Longview Museum of Fine Arts and Heartisans Marketplace, city spokesman Shawn Hara said.
They also took a sneak peek of the Longview Arboretum and Nature Center, which opens Saturday.

Great Reno Balloon Race lifts off

Aeronaut Mark Prothro and Dianne, his bride of 49 years, didn’t plan on joining the hot air balloon traveling circus, but they’ve been a part of it since the mid 1990s.
“Actually I wanted to get my license first, but I realized I didn’t have the temperament for it,” smiling Dianne Prothro said during the annual media day for the Great Reno Balloon Race at Rancho San Rafael Park on Thursday.
Mark Prothro said with a Southern drawl how he became involved in the sport of hot air ballooning.
“It was 1993 and we were living in Park City, Utah, and had a condo in the mountains that looked down on this small balloon festival. I’m an avid photographer and discovered if I sponsored a balloon I could ride in it and shoot photos. That got me up close and personal.

Hot Air Balloon Ride - Ensure Your Safety With Necessary Precautions

Hot Air Balloon Ride - Ensure Your Safety With Necessary Precautions

By

Riding hundreds of feet above the earth in a hot air balloon can be a real thrill. However, like every other adventure sport, hot air balloon ride comes with its share of risks. There have been numerous instances when hot air balloons have crashed and led to the death of riders. So, unless you are very sure about precautionary measures and ensure full protection, you must not go on a ride high up the sky. Here are certain important safety precautions and checks to make before you hitch a ride in a hot air balloon.
Safety equipment

Every balloon should contain basic safety equipment. Make sure to gather information from reliable sources such as ballooning guides and expert websites. As a minimum, you should check whether the balloon has an onboard flint spark lighter, parachutes and fire extinguisher. A flint spark lighter is used in case the flame that keeps the balloon floating goes off in mid flight. The pilot can relight the flame and prevent a crash. Fire extinguisher is necessary for obvious reasons. The standard extinguisher used in most of the balloons is a AB:E 1 kg type.

You should also look for a drop line. In several countries, this is a mandatory inclusion. A drop line is very useful in landing when the pilot cannot steer the balloon effective because of mild wind. Since the balloon runs the risks of damage from the obstructions on the ground, the ground crew use the drop line dropped by the pilot during landing to guide the balloon away from ground obstructions. Typically, a drop line is a 30 meter long sturdy rope.

Maintenance

A balloon that is not well maintained is always unsafe. Regular maintenance is as crucial to balloons as it is for aircraft. The most vulnerable part of the balloon is its fabric. Any small rip or tear can lead to disastrous repercussions during flight. Any such damage should be immediately repaired.

Besides, before you get into a hot air balloon, make sure to check out the basket. It should be clean and meticulously organized. Disorganized baskets are a major indication of inefficient management and maintenance. Check for stains and dirt at the exteriors as well. Sometimes, balloons land in slushy or muddy areas. In such cases, the operator company needs to clean and dry the basket thoroughly. In order to ensure safe landing, the skids provided at the bottom of the basket need to be replaced if damaged. As per protocol, thorough servicing and maintenance is a requisite once every year or after 100 flight hours.
Be alert

When you ride in a hot air balloon, your alertness can be your saviour. Be sensitive to the objects around you when you fly. Always keep a watch out for electrical lines, poles and masts that could collide with the balloon. Sometimes, the pilot might be concentrating on one particular thing and might not pay a lot of attention to obstacles. Deem it as your personal responsibility to alert the pilot in such circumstances.
Listen to what you are told

Before you take off, you are briefed about terms and conditions to be followed during the flight. These rules are for your own good. So, make sure you follow them implicitly.

Cloud 9 Baloon Flights offer hot air balloon rides over the spectacular countryside of Sydney's Hawkesbury Valley or the wine country of the Hunter Valley. They are the only company that pioneered ballooning in the Sydney area and remains the only one with authorisation to do so.

Five Questions To Ask Before Taking a Hot Air Balloon Ride

Five Questions To Ask Before Taking a Hot Air Balloon Ride

By
Can you picture yourself on a summer's day with clear, blue skies floating overhead in a hot air balloon? It's a great way to see the landscape; having an unobstructed view and feeling the wind blowing around you is an entirely different sensation than looking out of a small window as you zoom across the planet in a jet. Balloon flights are very popular as gifts for family and friends. Companies that run flights usually provide some champagne at the end of the journey to celebrate and participants receive a certificate authenticating the experience. Some couples choose to get married in a wicker basket high up in the sky. This is not a legal ceremony in the UK as yet but it is possible in Florida.

The hot air balloon transport was invented by two Frenchmen, the Montgolfier Brothers. There is a model of their original balloon from 1783 on display at the Science Museum in London. In 1960 Ed Yosk took his design skyward in Nebraska. That is essentially the version used today, and the material has evolved from the light nylon used by Yosk to balloons of a nylon or polyester material.

Most ballooning has been done as a pleasant, leisure activity. In later years the business world has begun to book hot air balloon companies for corporate hospitality and staff outings. Now there are many sport-type competitions and some adventurers have set out to make balloon flights for the record books. The world record for altitude was broken in India in 2005,when a balloon ascended to 21,290 meters (69, 852 feet). This isn't a safely recommended height; at that level oxygen is required.

Designers and pilots have invested a lot of time and money into making the activity as safe as possible and reputable companies who take the public on balloon flights have very good safety records. There have been accidents, most of which resulted from coming into contact with power lines. Rarely have accidents been solely due to pilot error.

When you are booking a hot air balloon flight, you should know at least five things.

1. Are the pilots FAA certified? FAA certified pilots renew their ratings twice per year by passing a flight review given by a commercial balloon pilot.
2. Is the balloon equipment FAA certified? FAA regulations require periodic inspections by FAA certified inspectors.
3. Has the company ever had any FAA incidents? These would be public records. Also ask if there have been any accidents at all. Before flight you should see the crew doing a thorough safety check. They will inspect the rigging, envelope, gondola and balloon. They will also know the weather report. If any single thing is wrong the flight should be aborted.
4. Does the company have insurance? Unfortunately a few in the past have not. Hopefully that will not be a problem for anyone now.
5. Is there an adequate crew? You are on the balloon ride to have fun, not to assist with take-offs, landings, or anything in between.

If you find you really love ballooning, you are not alone. Enthusiasts like to come together at the many events organized in America, Canada, the UK and Europe. There are annual hot air balloon festivals where the public can enjoy a great day out and competitors take part in races. The US National Hot Air Balloon championship has a different location each year and was in South Carolina in 2006. There is also a world championship and this took place in Japan in 2006.
I almost forgot. Do not forget to take a camera!

The Passengers Role When Embarking On A Hot Air Balloon Flight

The Passengers Role When Embarking On A Hot Air Balloon Flight

By

Hot air balloon flights have become popular all over the world. Their main selling point is the offer of a once in a lifetime opportunity to see some of the most stunning views from across the globe.
Whether taking a trip around the Great British countryside or spotting local wildlife on safari in the heart of the African deserts, hot air balloon flights are the perfect for experiencing breath taking views, four thousand feet up in the air.

But not all passengers will have experienced a balloon ride beforehand, and may feel anxious about what lies ahead. So it's important to take some time to put your passengers at ease and help them prepare for their journey in the best ways possible. Take a look at our tips below to learn how to prepare passengers for every possible hot air balloon ride.
Outline The Restrictions Clearly

Hot air balloon flights aren't always possible for all ages or types of people. Generally, no persons under the age of 12 should go on a balloon ride however all balloon companies have their own restrictions. Make sure you outline clearly on your website the restrictions you have in place, so passengers booking hot air balloon flights can be sure they are eligible to fly.
Give Passengers Advice Before Their Flight

For those that haven't experience the thrills of an air balloon before, they may start to panic about what to wear, what time they should arrive and whether they can bring family or friends along with them. So to put their mind at ease and to ensure they do bring the correct items, provide them with a checklist. This can either be sent through the post or email, giving some guidelines about the types of clothing suitable and an itinerary of the day so they know where and when to meet.
Important Points To Include On The Checklist

Guidelines on appropriate clothing should always be included as wearing the wrong thing can ruin hot air balloon flights for the passengers. Many hot air balloon companies offer passengers the chance to have their photo taken whilst in the air to keep as a souvenir. But it's also a good idea to suggest passengers bring their own camera or video camera. That way they can take some snaps of the stunning views they will see to remember forever.

On The Day, Hold A Question And Answer Session

This may sound a little formal, but it will aim to reduce any anxiety or nervousness that passengers may feel before they board their flight. First time flyers won't have experienced a feeling of flying like on hot air balloon flights before, so may want to put their worries at ease by asking the people in the know: the pilot and the ground crew. Preparing your passengers for the flight and putting them at ease is the number one priority, so no matter how silly or repetitive their questions may be, it's imperative that they all be answered.

Pilot credentials are an important factor to look at when choosing a service provider. Exceptional skills combined with lots of experience are one of the factors that make companies reliable and safe.
6. Take a look around cyber zone and read on posts and blogs of people who have either tried or are complete enthusiasts of balloon rides. This is where someone else's two cents can be of significance to that perfect adventure you are looking for.
