San Francisco Earthquake Shakes Bay Area: Residents Report Strong Tremors and Minor Damage

A moderate earthquake struck San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area early September 22, 2025, rattling homes, disrupting transit, and reigniting concerns about seismic preparedness in one of the most earthquake-prone regions of the United States.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake measured 5.4 magnitude and occurred at 4:17 AM local time, with an epicenter located 7 miles southwest of Daly City, near the San Andreas Fault. The tremor was felt across San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and as far south as San Jose.

The quake originated at a depth of 9.8 kilometers, which contributed to the widespread shaking but limited structural damage.

Thousands of residents reported being jolted awake by the quake, with social media flooded by videos of swaying chandeliers, rattling windows, and barking dogs. Emergency services responded to dozens of calls related to gas leaks, power outages, and minor injuries caused by falling objects.

  • BART temporarily suspended service for track inspections

  • SFO Airport reported no damage but conducted runway checks

  • Several schools delayed opening to assess building safety

No fatalities have been reported, and damage appears to be minimal, though officials continue to monitor aftershocks.

Seismologists say the quake was consistent with movement along the San Andreas Fault, which has historically produced some of California’s most destructive earthquakes. While this event was moderate, experts warn it could be a foreshock to a larger seismic event.

Dr. Lisa Grant Ludwig, a geophysicist at UC Irvine, stated:

“This is a reminder that the Bay Area is living on borrowed time. Preparedness is key.”

Local officials urged residents to review emergency plans and check supplies. The ShakeAlert system, California’s early warning network, successfully sent alerts seconds before the quake hit, allowing some users to take cover.

Recommended safety steps include:

  • ✅ Securing heavy furniture and appliances

  • ✅ Keeping flashlights and first-aid kits accessible

  • ✅ Knowing evacuation routes and communication plans

The San Francisco earthquake serves as a wake-up call for residents and policymakers alike. While damage was limited, the event underscores the importance of seismic readiness, especially in a region with a long history of tectonic activity.
