At approximately 10:25 a.m., Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old Iraq War veteran, drove his pickup truck into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, exited the vehicle, and began firing an assault rifle. He then ignited a fire using accelerants, causing the building to collapse in parts.

Sanford served in the U.S. Marines from 2004 to 2008, with a combat tour in Iraq. His military record includes multiple commendations, but no known criminal history. Authorities are still investigating his motive, which remains unclear.

His truck bore Iraq War veteran plates, American flags, and deer antlers—details that have drawn attention to the symbolic nature of the attack.

 Victims and Medical Response

Ten individuals were shot, with two pronounced dead at the scene. Seven are in stable condition, and one remains critical. Emergency crews transported victims to Henry Ford Genesys Hospital, which activated trauma and counseling teams to support survivors and families.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the violence, calling it “unacceptable in any place, especially a house of worship.” The FBI is leading the investigation, labeling the incident as “targeted violence.” The ATF confirmed the presence of suspected explosive devices, though their role in the fire is still under review.

The LDS Church issued a statement expressing sorrow and gratitude for global support, emphasizing the need for peace and healing.

The Michigan church shooting is a sobering reminder of the vulnerability of sacred spaces. As investigators search for answers, the Grand Blanc community mourns not only the victims of this tragedy but also the loss of their spiritual sanctuary. The attack, occurring just one day after the death of LDS President Russell M. Nelson, has left a deep scar on a grieving congregation.
