China sentenced Michael Spavor, a Canadian businessman, to 11 years in prison, a case widely seen as retaliation for the detention of a Huawei executive.

The sentencing suggests that a court in Beijing is likely to announce a similar guilty judgment soon in a parallel spying case against another Canadian, Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat arrested about the same time as Mr. Spavor, in late 2018.

The detentions occurred less than two weeks after the police in Vancouver detained a Chinese telecom executive, Meng Wanzhou, at the request of American prosecutors.
