Russian President Vladimir Putin has now assembled 70% of the military personnel and weapons on Ukraine's borders that he would need for a full-scale invasion of the country, according to two US officials familiar with the latest estimates.
Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has used the historic milestone of her Platinum Jubilee to redefine the future of the monarchy, calling for the Duchess of Cornwall to be known as Queen Camilla when Charles becomes King.
More than 900,000 people in the US have died of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic, according to data released Friday from Johns Hopkins University.

MONDAY

French President Emmanuel Macron will travel to Moscow to have a one-on-one meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing tension at the Ukrainian border. He will also travel to Kyiv this week. France has played an important role mediating between the two countries since the crisis first began. Macron has spoken five times with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky since December 2021. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is scheduled to visit the two countries the following week.

Jury selection also begins in the federal trial of the three men who murdered Ahmaud Arbery. Travis McMichael, 35, his father, Gregory McMichael, 66, and neighbor William "Roddie" Bryan were convicted in November on a raft of charges, including felony murder, for the 25-year-old Black man's death. This comes after a judge rejected the plea deal reached by prosecutors and Travis McMichael on hate crime charges, an agreement that would have precluded his federal trial.

FRIDAY

One of the rioters charged in connection with the January 6 attack on the US Capitol is due to appear in federal court. Douglas Jensen is accused of leading a violent mob that chased Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman. Jensen faces multiple felony charges, including assaulting or interfering with police, carrying a deadly weapon, and obstructing Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election.

It's also the first day of New York Fashion Week. For the next several days, some of the world's top fashion brands will host shows and events in the Big Apple. However, a number of designers have increasingly chosen to show their collections elsewhere -- or outside of the official calendar dates -- due to Covid-19 protocols and travel bans.

Oscars nominations to be announced
Nominations for the 94th Academy Awards will be announced live on Tuesday. Some of the early frontrunners for Best Picture include "Belfast," "The Power of the Dog" and "Dune." This year's Oscars may also be a breakthrough for female cinematographers. Cinematography is the only category that still exists for which a woman has never won an Academy Award. The pandemic forced last year's show to a nearly all-virtual event, and this year's show will likely have similar socially-distanced elements. The Oscars are scheduled to be held on Sunday, March 27, 2022 in Hollywood.

'Moonfall' hits US theaters

The latest disaster epic from Roland Emmerich, the director of "The Day After Tomorrow" and "Independence Day," tells the story of a crew sent into space on a seemingly impossible mission to save the world. CNN's Brian Lowry says "Moonfall" is loud, fast-paced and untethered by logic, as well as gravity.

2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
The Olympics are underway and the competition among athletes for medals will ramp up even more in the coming days. Events taking place this weekend include ski jumping, curling, ice hockey, luge and figure skating, to name a few. Another challenge some athletes are facing is Covid-19. A number of competitors have been barred from going inside the Olympic's "closed loop system"after testing positive for the virus upon arrival.

Introducing the Washington Commanders

The NFL's Washington franchise also unveiled its new team name last week -- the Washington Commanders. The change comes about 18 months after the franchise ditched the "Redskins" name for its racist connotations.
