Over 500 Native American children died at U.S. schools where they were forced to live between 1819 and 1969, an initial federal inquiry found.

An initial investigation commissioned by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American cabinet secretary in the United States, cataloged some of the brutal conditions that children endured at more than 400 boarding schools that the federal government forced them to attend between 1819 and 1969.
